Buzz Aldrin, in occasione del venticinquesimo anniversario dello sbarco sulla Luna (21 luglio 1969) ha dichiarato, alla presenza di Neil Armstrong, nel corso di una cerimonia celebrativa in Italia:
"... Poco dopo aver lasciato il campo gravitazionale della Terra diretti alla Luna, tutti e tre, Neil Armstrong, Mike Collins ed io, vedemmo apparire sull'oblò un oggetto luminoso che ci seguiva a distanza... Ne informammo Houston, la base. Pensammo che fosse l'ultimo stadio del Saturno 5, il missile che ci aveva lanciato, ma i conti non tornavano. Non poteva essere neppure la sonda robot lanciata dai sovietici per batterci almeno simbolicamente nella corsa alla Luna, perché era più avanti di noi. Che cos'era? Non lo so, non lo scoprimmo mai. L'oggetto ci accompagnò per molte ore e poi scomparve..."
